An aneroid barometer for classroom observation of atmospheric pressure and its changes: a sealed evacuated corrugated capsule moves a pointer over a circular scale graduated both in hectopascals and in millimetres of mercury. Intended for K-12 geography and science lessons under the supervision of a teacher.

Preparation and installation
  • After unpacking inspect the barometer: the glass intact, the scale clean, the pointer straight and touching neither the glass nor the dial.
  • Install the instrument indoors on an inner wall or horizontally on a table, away from draughts, direct sunlight, heating appliances and places with sharp temperature changes. Keep the chosen place unchanged: moving the instrument breaks the comparability of observations.
  • Leave the instrument in place for several hours after unpacking or moving, until the mechanism reaches room temperature. Readings taken earlier are unreliable.
  • Compare the readings with data from the nearest weather station, allowing for the fall of pressure with height above sea level. If the rear of the case has an adjusting screw, bring the readings to the reference value by turning the screw in small steps and tapping the glass after each step.
  • Start an observation log and record the first value as the initial one: an aneroid barometer is intended above all for tracking changes in pressure rather than its absolute value.
Taking readings
  • Before each reading tap the glass lightly with a finger. Friction in the hinges of the transmission holds the pointer back, and without tapping it shows the previous rather than the current pressure. The reading is taken at the new position of the pointer.
  • Look at the scale perpendicularly, so that the pointer and its part of the scale are in one line of sight; a sideways view shifts the reading through parallax.
  • Read the value at the nearest division, estimating fractions of a division by eye. Both scales show the same pressure, so the values in hectopascals and in millimetres of mercury are taken at the same time and are not converted into each other.
  • Record readings daily at the same hours, together with the date and time. Comparison of neighbouring entries gives the trend: rising pressure, falling pressure or a steady value, and it is this trend that characterises a change in the weather.
  • If the pointer does not move for several days and does not respond to tapping, the mechanism has jammed and the instrument needs to be checked.
Factors affecting the readings
  • Height above sea level is the main reason for a difference from meteorological bulletins: the instrument shows the pressure at the point of installation, while bulletins give the pressure reduced to sea level. The difference is constant for one place, so it is determined once and allowed for afterwards.
  • Temperature affects the elastic properties of the aneroid capsule and the spring. A barometer placed near a window, a radiator or an outer wall shows daily fluctuations unrelated to the weather.
  • Elastic after-effect and friction in the mechanism cause a lag: with a sharp change of pressure the pointer reaches its new position gradually, and on the way back to a previous value it gives a slightly different reading than on the way up.
  • Impact, transport and prolonged storage in a tilted position shift the zero. After every move the readings are checked again.
  • Sealed rooms with forced ventilation, and draughts near open doors, produce short-lived spikes that do not correspond to the atmospheric pressure outdoors.
Safety
  • Protect the instrument from impact, dropping and vibration: the aneroid capsule and the levers of the transmission deform, after which the readings become false with no visible outward sign.
  • Do not open the case and do not attempt to repair the transmission mechanism yourself.
  • Do not carry the instrument to places where the pressure is outside the scale: the pointer runs against the stop and the mechanism is overloaded.
  • Do not store or install the instrument near heating appliances or in direct sunlight.
  • Before each use check the security of fastenings and the integrity of the moving parts; learners work with the instrument under the supervision of a teacher.
Maintenance
  • Wipe the glass and the case with a soft dry cloth. Do not use solvents or abrasives: they cloud the glass and damage the case finish.
  • Do not lubricate the transmission mechanism and do not try to bend the pointer. Readings are adjusted only with the screw, where fitted, and only against a reference pressure value.
  • Once a year compare the readings with data from the nearest weather station and adjust them if necessary. An instrument whose pointer does not respond to tapping, or whose deviation keeps growing, is withdrawn from use.
  • Keep the instrument in a dry room, in its working position, protected from impact. For transport pack it in soft material and place no heavy objects under or on it.
Storage, transport and disposal
  • Store in a dry, clean, ventilated room at +5 °C to +40 °C and relative humidity of 60 %, non-condensing, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, dust and heat sources. Keep the storage air free of impurities that cause corrosion of metals.
  • Operating climatic conditions: air temperature +5 °C to +40 °C, relative humidity 40 % to 60 %, atmospheric pressure 84 to 107 kPa (630-800 mmHg).
  • During transport the packed product is secured against movement and protected from precipitation and impact; the product is supplied in the manufacturer's packaging.
  • The product is not electrical or electronic equipment and carries no WEEE marking. It contains no hazardous substances and is disposed of as municipal waste after separation by material, in line with the rules of the operating organisation and the applicable law.
Warranty
  • Warranty obligations cover the elimination of defects and the replacement of defective parts or of the equipment for three years, and the availability of spare parts and consumables for five years.
