Use

  • The grid printed on the sphere is used to show the position of the equator and the poles, the direction of the graticule lines and the way a point on the Earth's surface is located.
  • Parallels: closed lines that do not intersect and become shorter from the equator to the poles; the equator is the longest parallel and divides the model into two hemispheres.
  • Meridians: all of the same length, they converge at the poles and set the north-south direction, while the parallels set the west-east direction.
  • Both families of lines together give the graticule: a point is found at the intersection of a parallel and a meridian, which is how geographic coordinates are explained.
  • Rotate the model slowly during the demonstration and use a pointer without pressing its tip against the surface of the sphere.

Preparation

  • Unpack the model and check the sphere: no dents, cracks or coating peel-off, and the lines and labels clear over the whole surface.
  • If the model is supplied disassembled, join the stand to the sphere mounting unit and tighten the threaded joint by hand, without tools. The sphere rotates freely, without touching the stand.
  • Place the model on a level horizontal surface of the demonstration table or on a separate shelf, away from direct sunlight and heaters, leaving free space for the sphere to rotate.

Safety

  • Intended for general secondary education, for learners aged 10 and over (grade 5 and above), under the supervision of a teacher.
  • Do not use the product as a support and do not lean on the sphere: the stand is designed only for the mass of the model.
  • Rotate the sphere smoothly, holding it by the surface with the palm, not by the axis or the stand.
  • Carry the product with both hands, holding the stand and the sphere at the same time — the joint between them is the most vulnerable part of the design.

Maintenance and storage

  • Remove dust with a dry soft lint-free cloth; remove soiling with a cloth barely moistened with clean water and wipe dry afterwards. Solvents, alcohol, abrasive powders and glass cleaners are prohibited — they wash off the printed image and the grid lines.
  • Check the sphere-to-stand joint and the stability of the stand periodically; tighten a loosened threaded joint by hand so that the sphere still rotates freely.
  • Store in a dry heated room on a horizontal surface, covered against dust; do not place any objects on the model, as the thin-walled sphere deforms under prolonged load.
  • Storage conditions: temperature +5 °C to +40 °C, relative humidity 60 %.

Compliance

  • Complies with the general product safety requirements of European Union legislation. The product is not electrical or electronic equipment, so the WEEE marking does not apply to it.
