Use and Handling

  • Intended users: general secondary education institutions, learners aged 10 and older (grade 5 and above), under the supervision of a teacher
  • Applications: practical and field lessons — pH of liquids and solutions, natural water samples, soil extracts
  • Reading results: the value first changes quickly and then stabilises; only the settled value is recorded, together with sample temperature, place and time of sampling
  • Calibration: performed before every series of measurements, after replacing the electrode and after a long break; buffer solution is poured into clean glassware and never returned to the bottle
  • Field work: the instrument is carried in the box together with buffer solutions and distilled water for rinsing; calibration is done before setting out and readings are checked against a buffer solution on site

Safety

  • Use only batteries of the type and rating stated in the passport or on the housing; observe polarity and do not mix new and partly discharged cells
  • Remove the batteries if the instrument will not be used for more than a month; leaking electrolyte destroys the instrument
  • Do not open the housing, and protect it from impact, moisture and direct sunlight; do not recharge non-rechargeable cells or throw them into fire
  • Do not touch the sensitive element of the electrode and do not wipe it dry; drops are removed by touching a soft tissue to it
  • Immerse the electrode only to the depth provided by its design, without resting it on the bottom or walls of the vessel and without stirring the solution
  • Work with samples and reagents in protective goggles and gloves; measure pH only within 0 to 60 °C and never immerse the electrode in hot solutions or melts
  • Pupils work with the instrument under the supervision of a teacher

Maintenance

  • Rinse the electrode with distilled water before and after each measurement and whenever moving from one sample to another
  • Store the electrode with the sensitive element wet — in the cap with storage solution or in a buffer solution from the set; a dried-out electrode loses sensitivity and its error grows beyond ±0.1 pH
  • Clean a fouled electrode as instructed by the manufacturer, without abrasives or hard brushes, then recalibrate
  • Wipe the housing and the display with a soft damp cloth without solvents; do not immerse the instrument in water and keep the electrode connector dry and clean
  • Keep buffer solutions in tightly closed bottles and replace them after the manufacturer's expiry date
  • Replace an electrode that gives unstable readings in buffer solution even after calibration

Storage and Transport

  • Storage: in the box, in a dry, clean, ventilated and heated room at +5 °C to +40 °C and relative humidity of 60 % (non-condensing), away from direct sunlight, moisture, dust, heat sources and reagents
  • Operating climate: air temperature +5 °C to +40 °C, relative humidity 40 % to 60 %, atmospheric pressure 84 to 107 kPa
  • Transport: in the manufacturer's packaging, protected from precipitation and impact during loading

Warranty and Disposal

  • Warranty: defect repair and replacement of defective parts or equipment for 3 years; spare parts and consumables available for 5 years
  • Disposal: WEEE marked — not to be disposed of with unsorted household waste; batteries are removed and handed in separately, metal parts go to scrap metal and electronic components to specialised recycling
