Project overview

As part of the large EU-funded program EU4Skills: Modernisation of Vocational Education and Training Infrastructure in Ukraine, the Stryi Higher Vocational School No. 34 in Lviv region underwent a major transformation. The project – financed by the European Union and implemented by KfW in cooperation with the Ukrainian Social Investment Fund and Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science – involved comprehensive refurbishment of training workshops and the delivery of modern equipment. UNOWA played a key role as a reliable partner by supplying advanced educational equipment to upgrade the school’s laboratories and workshops, contributing to a nationwide effort that modernised 8 vocational institutions across Ukraine. The new facilities at Stryi VET School No. 34 now function as high-tech training spaces with simulators and systems that realistically reproduce industrial processes, giving students hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies.

Project details

Unowa’s Contribution
  • Equipment supply to 8 VET institutions: UNOWA delivered state-of-the-art training equipment to eight vocational education institutions in various regions of Ukraine as part of EU4Skills. The Stryi vocational school was one of the beneficiaries, receiving modern machinery and learning tools that significantly enhanced its training capacity.‍

  • Over €1.5 million in equipment value: The total value of equipment provided by UNOWA across all target institutions exceeded €1.5million, underscoring the scale of its involvement in upgrading VET infrastructure. At Stryi VET School No. 34 alone, UNOWA’s deliveries amounted to over €540,000 in advanced tools and machines for training.‍

  • Varied training equipment categories: UNOWA’s supplies covered a wide range of training needs. This included new computer and IT equipment for digital learning, welding simulators and metalworking tools for the updated welding workshop, automotive engine and transmission stands for mechanic training, as well as science and STEM kits for technology education. This diverse equipment ensures that students and instructors have access to modern tools across different vocational disciplines.

Impact and significance
  • Enhanced practical training: The upgraded facilities have turned traditional classrooms into fully functional labs and workshops, allowing students to practice skills on industry-grade equipment. At Stryi School #34, the workshops were transformed into a “high-tech space” with simulators that “fully reproduce real production processes,” enabling trainees to gain experience mirroring real workplace scenarios. This hands-on learning environment strengthens the practical component of vocational education.

  • Increased graduate competitiveness: Training with modern tools and technologies makes students more competitive in the job market. Graduates are now familiar with contemporary industry practices – from advanced welding techniques (including laser and plasma technologies) to modern automotive diagnostics – which boosts their employability in fields like manufacturing, automotive service, and engineering.

  • Sustainable VET development: The substantial investment in equipment and infrastructure provides a durable foundation for vocational education in the region. The new workshops and labs will serve students for many years, supporting continuous skill development and adaptation to evolving industry standards. By strengthening the material base of the school, the project ensures the VET institution can deliver high-quality training long-term.

  • Alignment with European standards: This modernisation exemplifies successful collaboration between business (UNOWA), international partners, and government in reforming vocational education. The updated Lviv-region facility now meets EU-aligned standards for training environment and equipment, facilitating the integration of European best practices into Ukraine’s vocational training system. The project not only improved infrastructure but also fostered a new approach to vocational education, emphasizing quality, inclusivity (with barrier-free access), and relevance to labor market needs – in line with European approaches.
